Gentamicin – an antibiotic that belongs to a group of aminoglycosides. Its mechanism of action is in violation of bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S-subunit of the bacterial ribosome. Under these conditions, it’s observed the formation of a protein with irrelevant amino acid sequence.
It is active against the gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms: Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Enterobacter aerogenes, Klebsiella spp., some species of Proteus spp. and Serratia spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pasteurella multocida, Starhylococcus aureus, Serpulina hyodysenteriae, Mycoplasma spp.
The mechanism of action is to block protein synthesis in bacterial cells.
Resistance to it is rare and slow to develop.
The maximum drug concentration in blood serum is observed one hour after administration. Therapeutic concentrations stored in the body 8 to 12 hours. Gentamicin is also penetrating into the pleural and peritoneal cavity and placenta. In the active form excreted by the kidneys.
